Raksha Bandhan 2026 falls on Friday, 28 August, and this year the muhurat matters more than usual, because if you are planning the day, or still deciding what to gift, here is everything in one place.

When is Raksha Bandhan 2026?

Friday, 28 August 2026

Festival date Friday, 28 August 2026
Purnima tithi begins 9:08 AM, Thursday 27 August 2026.
Purnima tithi ends 9:48 AM, Friday 28 August 2026.
Bhadra kaal 9:08 AM - 9:34 PM, Thursday 27 August 2026.
Shubh muhurat for tying rakhi Sunrise until 9:48 AM on 28 August.
Bhadra during the muhurat? No, the window is clear this year.

City-wise, the window opens at local sunrise and closes at the same moment everywhere:

City Muhurat window (28 August 2026)
Kolkata approx. 5:17 AM – 9:48 AM
Delhi approx. 5:57 AM – 9:48 AM
Mumbai approx. 6:22 AM – 9:48 AM

The practical takeaway: plan the ceremony for the morning. Unlike years where the tithi runs into the evening, 2026 gives you a window that ends at 9:48 AM. Families who traditionally do the rakhi after lunch should shift earlier this year or consult their family purohit, since some traditions permit observance through the tithi's full presence.

Why the 28th and not the 27th?

Purnima, the full moon day of the month of Shravana, on which Raksha Bandhan is always observed, begins at 9:08 AM on 27 August. That is well after sunrise.

Hindu festivals that depend on a lunar tithi generally follow the udaya tithi rule: the observance is kept on the day when the tithi is running at sunrise. On 27 August, Purnima had not yet started at sunrise. On 28 August, it had. So the 28th is the day.

There is a second reason. Bhadra kaal occupies almost the whole of 27 August, from 9:08 AM to 9:34 PM. Bhadra is traditionally considered an inauspicious period for beginning auspicious undertakings, and there is a longstanding injunction against tying rakhi during it, the story most often cited is that Ravana's sister tied his rakhi during Bhadra, and his downfall followed. Between the udaya tithi rule and Bhadra, the 27th is ruled out on both counts.

What Raksha Bandhan means.

The name is Sanskrit and quite literal. Raksha means protection; bandhan means a bond or a tie. Together: the bond of protection.

What is being tied is a thread, and what the thread stands for is a promise in two directions, a sister's prayer for her brother's wellbeing, and a brother's commitment to stand by her. The reciprocity is the point. Raksha Bandhan is not a one-way tribute; it is an exchange, and the gift a brother gives in return is part of the ritual rather than an optional extra.

Over time the festival has widened well beyond biological siblings. Cousins, chosen siblings, close friends, neighbours and colleagues tie rakhi. Sisters tie rakhi to sisters. In recent decades the thread has also been tied to soldiers, to trees in environmental campaigns, and across community lines as a deliberate statement about protection being owed to more people than just one's own family.

The stories behind rakhi.

Krishna and Draupadi -

The best known account appears in the Mahabharata tradition. Krishna cuts his finger, and Draupadi tears a strip from her sari to bind the wound without hesitation. Krishna, moved, promises to protect her. That promise is later invoked in her most desperate moment. The story places the emphasis where the festival places it: on the instinct to help, and on the debt of protection it creates.

Indra and Indrani -

In a Bhavishya Purana narrative, Indra is losing a prolonged war against the asuras. His wife Sachi, on Brihaspati's counsel, prepares a sacred thread and ties it on his wrist. He returns to battle and prevails. This version is notable because the thread is tied by a wife rather than a sister, a reminder that the raksha sutra predates its specifically sibling meaning.

Rani Karnavati and Humayun -

The most frequently repeated historical story tells of Rani Karnavati of Mewar sending a rakhi to the Mughal emperor Humayun as an appeal for help against Bahadur Shah of Gujarat. It is a genuinely popular account, though historians have noted that it appears in later sources rather than contemporary ones and its historicity is debated. It has become part of the festival's cultural memory regardless which is its own kind of significance.

How Raksha Bandhan is celebrated -

Preparing the thali:

The puja thali is assembled in the morning: a rakhi, roli or kumkum, unbroken rice grains (akshat), a diya, sweets, and often a small silver or brass kalash. Many families keep a diya lit through the ceremony.

The ceremony -

  1. The brother sits facing east; the sister stands before him.
  2. She applies a tilak of roli and presses akshat onto his forehead.
  3. She performs aarti, circling the lit diya before him.
  4. She ties the rakhi on his right wrist, with a prayer for his health and long life.
  5. She feeds him a sweet.
  6. He gives her a gift, and traditionally offers a promise of protection.
  7. Both seek the blessings of elders present.

Most families fast until the rakhi is tied, which is another practical reason the morning muhurat matters.

Regionally

  • In coastal Maharashtra, Goa and parts of the south, the same day is Narali Purnima, when fishing communities offer coconuts to the sea before the season resumes.
  • In parts of the south and west, Brahmin communities observe Avani Avittam or Upakarma, changing the sacred thread on this day.
  • In Odisha and nearby, it coincides with Gamha Purnima.
  • In Rajasthan, sisters-in-law tie lumba rakhi to the bangles of their brothers' wives, acknowledging her place in the bond.
  • In West Bengal, the day is also observed as Jhulan Purnima, and rakhi carries an additional historical resonance from 1905, when Rabindranath Tagore called for people to tie rakhis across communities in protest against the Partition of Bengal.

Why diamond is the forever traditional gift?

There is a reason diamond silver jewellery appears so persistently at Indian ceremonies, in the thali, in the coin pressed into a palm, in the first anklets a child is given.

Silver is considered auspicious and purifying in Indian tradition, associated with the moon and with coolness and calm. It is the metal of shagun: given at births, at weddings, at Dhanteras. It also has an unfussy practicality it holds genuine value, it can be worn daily rather than reserved, and it works equally well as a first serious piece of jewellery or as a small token that will not embarrass anyone by its extravagance.

For a festival that is fundamentally about a promise you intend to keep, a metal that lasts is not a bad symbol.

Diamond Silver Jewellery gift ideas for your sister -

  • Pendants with a fine chain - an initial, a name, a birthstone or an evil eye motif. The most-worn gift on this list.
  • Stud earrings - small, everyday, impossible to get wrong.
  • Silver bangles or a kada - traditional and substantial without being formal.
  • Anklets (payal) - a classic for younger sisters and newly married ones alike.
  • Toe rings (bichhiya) - customary for married sisters.
  • Stacking rings - a set of two or three fine bands.
  • Personalised nameplate jewellery - engraved with a name, a date, or a word only the two of you would understand.
  • A silver coin - the simplest shagun there is, and still the safest gift for a sister whose taste you cannot predict.

Gift ideas for brothers -

The return gift is part of the ritual, and increasingly the rakhi itself is going in both directions.

  • Silver kada - the most-requested men's silver piece in India, and one that gets worn continuously once given.
  • Silver chains - a plain box or curb link, worn under a shirt.
  • Rings and bracelets - oxidised or brushed finishes for a less polished look.
  • Silver rakhi - a rakhi with a silver charm or bracelet base that becomes wearable jewellery after the day, rather than a thread that comes off in a week.
  • Silver coin or a small idol - for brothers who genuinely do not wear jewellery.

A short buying checklist

  • Confirm the purity. Ask whether the piece is 92.5% sterling, and look for a 925 stamp. Since September 2025, BIS also offers HUID-based hallmarking for silver under IS 2112:2025  it is voluntary, but a hallmark you can verify in the BIS CARE app is worth asking for.
  • Order early. With the festival on 28 August and the muhurat closing before 10 AM, a delivery that arrives on the day is cutting it fine.
  • Check the return window before buying a ring or bangle in a size you are guessing at.
  • Include the care card. Silver tarnishes; a polishing cloth alongside the gift means it still looks new next Rakhi.
  • Keep the invoice - it matters for exchanges and for any future valuation.
