What to Consider When Buying Diamond Jewellery for Children

Choose 14K gold over 18K. It is harder and more scratch-resistant. Children are active. 14K holds its shape better with daily wear and contact.

Bezel settings over prong settings. Prong settings have exposed metal tips that can snag on clothing. Bezel settings wrap the diamond in a protective metal rim. For children under 10, bezel is the better choice.

Check for IGI or GIA certification even on small stones. A 0.05ct diamond is still a real diamond and should be documented. Uncertified stones cannot be verified as natural or lab grown diamonds.

Size matters. Most pieces in this collection are adjustable. For bangles and bracelets, measure the child's wrist before ordering. Goenka offers free resizing within 30 days.

Lab Grown vs Natural Diamond Jewellery for Kids

The diamonds are identical in composition. The practical reason to choose lab grown for children's jewellery is price. A certified 0.1ct lab grown diamond stud costs roughly half what a natural diamond stud of the same grade does. For jewellery a child will likely outgrow or lose, the price difference matters.

Lab grown diamonds and natural diamonds differ only in origin and price:

•     Carbon structure: Identical in both. Same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, same refractive index, same fire and brilliance.

•     Certification: Both carry IGI or GIA grading certificates with full 4Cs documentation.

•     Price: Lab grown costs 60 to 75% less than a natural diamond of the same cut, colour, and clarity grade.

•     Origin: Lab grown from a CVD or HPHT laboratory. Natural from earth-mined sources.

•     Secondary market: Lab grown has a lower secondary resale market at this time. Natural diamonds have an established resale market. Worth knowing before purchase.

•     Under Rs.8,000: 0.02ct to 0.06ct. Best for nose pins, small studs, daily wear.

•     Rs.8,000 to Rs.20,000: 0.06ct to 0.15ct. Best for earrings, small pendants, gifting.

•     Rs.20,000 to Rs.50,000: 0.15ct to 0.35ct. Best for bracelets, bangles, occasion jewellery.

•     Above Rs.50,000: 0.35ct and above. Best for naming ceremony sets, fine gifting.
