1. Cut quality, which matters more the bigger you go
A mediocre cut on a 1 carat stone reads as slightly less sparkle. On a 5 carat stone it reads as a large dull window in the middle of the diamond. There is more surface for light to leak out of, and more of it in plain view. Insist on Excellent, and do not let anyone talk you into Very Good to save money at this size.
2. Colour grade
Larger stones hold more material for light to travel through, so any body colour has further to accumulate before it reaches your eye. Where G or H is the sweet spot at 1 or 2 carats, we would set G as the floor at 3 carats and prefer F or E at 5. In yellow gold you can be slightly more relaxed; in platinum or white gold, less so.
3. Clarity grade
