9K Gold Explained: What 9 Karat Gold Really Is, What It Costs in India, and When It Beats 14K and 18K

Last updated: 7 September 2026 | Written by the Goenka Jewellers manufacturing team, Kolkata

Quick answer: 9K gold (also written 9KT, 9 karat, 9 carat, or 9 K) contains 9 parts pure gold out of 24, which works out to 37.5% pure gold by weight. That is why it carries the fineness mark 375. It is legally recognised gold in India and has been covered under BIS hallmarking since July 2025, so a genuine 9 karat piece now carries a HUID number just like 22K does. At today's rate, the pure gold inside one gram of 9K is worth roughly ₹5,984 against ₹11,968 for 18K, which is why 9K gold has become the practical choice for everyday lab grown diamond rings and earrings.

What does 9K gold actually mean?

Karat is not a measure of weight. It is a measure of how much of the metal is gold and how much is something else.

Gold purity is expressed out of 24 parts. So:

  • 24K = 24 parts gold out of 24 = 99.9% pure
  • 22K = 22 parts out of 24 = 91.6% pure
  • 18K = 18 parts out of 24 = 75% pure
  • 14K = 14 parts out of 24 = 58.5% pure
  • 9K = 9 parts out of 24 = 37.5% pure

The remaining 62.5% in 9 karat gold is an alloy, usually copper, silver, zinc and sometimes a small amount of palladium or nickel depending on whether the piece is yellow, white or rose. Those metals are not filler. They are what make the metal hard enough to hold a diamond securely through years of hand washing, key fumbling and school bags.

Multiply 37.5% by 1,000 and you get 375. That number, stamped inside a ring shank or on the back of an earring post, is the international shorthand for 9KT gold. If you have ever picked up a piece of British or Australian jewellery and seen "375" instead of a karat number, that was 9 carat gold. The same system gives you 585 for 14K and 750 for 18K, which we unpack in our guide to what 750 and the other gold purity marks mean.

Is 9 karat gold real gold, or is it plated?

It is real gold, and this is the single biggest misunderstanding we correct in our showroom.

Gold plating means a base metal like brass or silver with a microscopic gold coating on top, typically 0.5 to 3 microns. Scratch it, and the base metal shows. 9K gold is not coated. It is a solid gold alloy, gold all the way through. Cut a 9 karat ring in half and both halves are still 37.5% gold.

The reason the doubt exists in India is historical. For decades Indian gold buying meant 22K, because jewellery doubled as savings. Anything below 18K was treated with suspicion because it was not hallmarked, which meant a buyer had no way to verify what they were actually paying for. That gap is now closed.

The 2025 rule change that made 9K gold trustworthy in India

In July 2025, the Bureau of Indian Standards extended mandatory hallmarking to 9 carat gold. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs notification set a minimum fineness of 375 parts per thousand for 9K and brought it under the same enforcement regime as every other grade.

Hallmarking in India now covers seven purities: 24K, 23K, 22K, 20K, 18K, 14K and 9K.

This matters more than it sounds. Before the notification, a shop could sell you "9 carat" jewellery and there was no independent test backing that claim. Today, a hallmarked 9KT piece from a BIS registered jeweller carries a six digit alphanumeric HUID that you can look up yourself in the BIS CARE app. Surendra Mehta of the India Bullion and Jewellers Association put it plainly when the rule came in, saying the trade had been pushing for it for over a year and expected it to widen demand, particularly outside the metros.

For a buyer, the practical takeaway is simple. Do not buy 9 karat gold without a HUID. Every 9K piece we manufacture at Goenka Jewellers is HUID hallmarked, the same as our 14K and 18K.

Silver runs on a separate and much newer scheme, which we cover in sterling silver vs 925 silver if you are comparing metals.

What to check on a 9K gold hallmark

A BIS hallmark on 9 karat gold has three marks:

  1. The BIS logo, a triangular mark
  2. The purity grade, shown as 9K375
  3. The six digit HUID, unique to that single piece

Open the BIS CARE app, enter the HUID, and it should return the item description, the purity, the jeweller's registration number and the assaying centre. If it returns nothing, walk away.

9K gold price in India today

Here is the part most blogs avoid, because it requires actual arithmetic.

The gold content in any piece is worth its weight multiplied by its purity multiplied by the 24K rate. As on 30 August 2026, 24 carat gold in India was quoting around ₹15,957 per gram.

Purity Pure gold content Metal value per gram Gold cost of a 3 gram piece
9K (375) 37.5% ₹5,984 ₹17,952
14K (585) 58.5% ₹9,335 ₹28,005
18K (750) 75.0% ₹11,968 ₹35,904
22K (916) 91.6% ₹14,617 ₹43,851

Rates move daily. We publish our live 9K to 24K rate on the Goenka Jewellers website every morning so you can check our numbers against the market before you order.

Look at that first and third row again. On the same design, in the same weight, the gold in a 9 karat setting costs about half what an 18 karat setting costs. On a 3 gram ring that is roughly ₹18,000 saved. On a heavier piece the gap widens further.

That saving does not vanish. It moves. Most of our customers redirect it into a larger centre stone, which is the whole reason 9K exists as a category.

What you actually pay at the counter

The metal value above is not the sticker price. A finished piece of 9KT gold jewellery is priced as:

Gold weight × 9K rate + diamond value + making charges + 3% GST

At Goenka Jewellers we show you all four lines separately. You see the gold cost, the stone cost, the making charge and the tax as distinct numbers, not folded into one opaque "per gram" figure. If a jeweller will not break it up for you, that is usually because the breakup is not flattering. Our full lab grown diamond price guide for India walks through the same arithmetic on the stone side.

9K vs 14K vs 18K vs 22K: an honest comparison

9K gold 14K gold 18K gold 22K gold
Purity 37.5% 58.5% 75% 91.6%
Hallmark 375 585 750 916
Hardness Hardest Hard Moderate Soft
Colour depth Lightest yellow Warm yellow Rich yellow Deep yellow
Daily wear Excellent Excellent Good Poor for rings
Diamond security Best grip Very good Good Weakest
Cost of metal Lowest Low Moderate Highest
Tarnish risk Slightly higher Low Very low Negligible
Resale as bullion Lowest per gram Low Moderate Highest
Best for Everyday rings, studs, kids' jewellery Everyday and bridal Bridal, solitaires Traditional gold, chains

A few honest notes on this table.

9 karat gold is genuinely harder. Copper and zinc make it more resistant to scratching, denting and prong bending than 18K or 22K. For a solitaire ring worn every single day, that is a real functional advantage, not marketing.

The colour is lighter. With only 37.5% gold, yellow 9KT reads as a paler, cooler yellow than 22K. Some buyers prefer it because it looks contemporary. Some find it too pale next to family jewellery. Look at both in daylight before deciding. In white and rose finishes the difference is far less noticeable, which is why most of our 9K white gold lab grown diamond rings satisfy buyers who were initially unsure.

Tarnish is possible but manageable. More alloy means more metals that can react with sweat, perfume and humidity. This is not the dramatic blackening people imagine. It is a gradual dulling over months, and it comes back with a soft cloth. Coastal and monsoon humidity accelerate it slightly.

The resale gap is real. We will not pretend otherwise. Per gram, 9K gold returns less bullion value than 22K. What matters is what you do about it, which we cover below.

Why 9K gold and lab grown diamonds are such a good match

This pairing is the reason the 9 karat category has grown so fast in India since 2025.

A diamond ring has two costs: the stone and the mount. Lab grown diamonds already solved the stone side. At Goenka Jewellers, IGI certified lab grown diamonds sit at a flat rate of roughly ₹25,000 per carat at our recommended grade, rising to about ₹30,000 per carat for D colour internally flawless. That rate holds from one carat all the way to seven, which is unusual, because natural diamond pricing climbs steeply with size.

But the mount stayed expensive. On a solitaire, gold plus making runs roughly ₹65,000 to ₹90,000 in 18K depending on stone size. For a buyer with a ₹1,00,000 budget, the mount was eating most of it.

Moving to a 9 karat setting changes the arithmetic completely. The same design, the same finish, the same certified stone, with the metal cost cut close to half. Two things follow:

  1. You can afford a bigger centre stone. The money saved on gold goes into carat weight, which is what anyone actually notices.
  2. The setting is structurally better for the job. Harder metal means prongs that hold their shape, which matters when you are protecting a stone you paid real money for.

There is a design argument too. A lab grown diamond ring in 9K white gold gives you the bright, cool, almost platinum look that suits a solitaire, at a fraction of platinum's cost.

9K gold lab grown diamond rings

Our 9K lab grown diamond ring collection starts at ₹13,281.

That is a complete, finished, hallmarked ring with an IGI certified lab grown diamond in it, not a starting price on a semi mount. The range covers eternity bands, everyday stackable rings and kids' rings, mostly in the 0.16 to 0.30 carat band.

Who buys these:

  • Women who want a diamond ring they never take off, including at work, in the kitchen and at the gym
  • Buyers who want a real diamond ring under ₹20,000
  • Parents buying a first diamond ring for a daughter
  • Anyone building a stack, where three 9 karat bands cost less than one 18K band

Every ring is made to order in our own Kolkata workshop unless it is marked ready to ship, in which case it dispatches the same day. That distinction matters beyond delivery time: customised and made to order products are non-returnable and non-exchangeable under our policy, so if keeping a future exit open is important to you, start with the ready to ship collection.

If the ring in question is an engagement ring, read our engagement ring buying guide for India first, which sets out the order to make your decisions in. For a man's ring, we cover proportions and settings separately in the best engagement ring for men.

9K gold lab grown diamond earrings

Our 9K lab grown diamond earring collection starts at ₹15,809 and runs up to around ₹29,500 for a 0.60 carat pair.

Earrings are arguably where 9KT gold makes the most sense of all. A stud sits against skin all day, gets caught in hair and clothing, and is the single most commonly lost category of jewellery in India. Harder metal means a post that does not bend and a back that does not deform. Lower metal cost means losing one is annoying rather than devastating.

A representative slice of the current range:

Carat weight Price Availability
0.14 ct ₹15,809 Ready to ship
0.16 ct ₹17,720 Ready to ship
0.20 ct ₹21,280 Ready to ship
0.27 ct ₹20,534 Ready to ship
0.39 ct ₹25,477 Ready to ship
0.60 ct ₹29,497 Made to order

Every pair is IGI certified and HUID hallmarked.

The resale question, answered properly

This is where most 9 karat gold articles get vague, so let us be specific.

How the open market values 9K gold: a jeweller weighs the piece, multiplies by 0.375 to get pure gold content, multiplies by the day's rate, then deducts. Deductions typically run 5% to 15% for refining and handling. So a 10 gram 9K piece at a ₹15,957 rate has about ₹59,839 of gold in it, and you might be offered somewhere in the region of ₹51,000 to ₹57,000 as scrap, with nothing paid for the diamond or the craftsmanship.

That is the honest picture at a random shop. It is also exactly why the buyback policy you sign up to matters more than the karat you choose. We set out the questions worth asking any brand in lifetime exchange vs cash buyback.

What we do instead at Goenka Jewellers. These are our published terms, set out in full on our return and buy-back policy page:

Buy-Back: cash return of 100% on gold and 80% on diamonds, and 100% on diamonds when you exchange rather than encash, valued at market rates on the date of return.

Customised and made to order products are non-returnable and non-exchangeable.

Terms and conditions apply. Full policy on our return policy page.

Three details are worth drawing out, because they are where policies quietly differ.

  • The gold is valued at the market rate on the day you return it, not the rate on the day you bought and not a scrap rate with a refining deduction taken off the top. If gold has risen since you bought, your gold component rises with it.
  • The cash figure is real cash, not store credit. You can walk out with money and no new purchase. Credit dressed up as buyback is the most common trick in this category.
  • Exchange pays more than cash on the stone. 100% of the diamond value if you put it toward a new piece, 80% if you want the money instead.

Run the comparison on an eligible piece. A 9 karat piece bought with a full gold buyback and an 80% stone buyback returns more to you than an 18 karat piece bought from a jeweller who offers scrap value and nothing on the diamond. Karat purity is not what determines your return. The policy behind it is, and the exclusions in that policy are worth reading before you commission anything bespoke.

Does 9 carat gold tarnish, fade, or turn your finger green?

Three separate questions that get muddled together.

Fading: no. Fading is a plating problem. There is no plating on solid 9K gold to wear off.

Tarnishing: possible, slowly. The copper and silver in the alloy can react with air, sweat, chlorine and cosmetics, producing a dull film over months of wear. It sits on the surface. A soft cloth and warm soapy water take it off, and a professional polish restores it fully.

Green skin: uncommon and usually not the gold. It happens when copper reacts with acidic sweat, and it is far more likely on cheap unhallmarked jewellery with high copper content than on properly alloyed hallmarked 9 karat gold. If it does happen, it washes off and is harmless.

How to care for 9KT gold jewellery

  • Put jewellery on last, after perfume, sunscreen and hair products
  • Take rings off before swimming, since chlorine is the worst offender
  • Remove before the gym, cleaning and dishwashing
  • Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing
  • Store pieces separately in pouches, not jumbled in one box
  • Clean every few weeks in warm water with a drop of mild soap and a soft brush
  • Get a professional polish once a year, which we do free for our customers

Monsoon humidity in Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai speeds up dulling. Wiping the piece dry at the end of the day handles almost all of it. For the stone rather than the metal, follow our method for cleaning a lab grown diamond ring at home.

Who should buy 9 karat gold, and who should not

9K gold is right for you if:

  • You want a diamond ring or studs for genuine daily wear
  • You want maximum carat weight for your budget
  • You work with your hands or wear jewellery through housework and travel
  • You are buying a first diamond piece, or a gift, and want it to look substantial
  • You are buying for a child or teenager
  • You like a lighter, cooler, more modern gold tone

Consider 14K or 18K instead if:

  • You want the deeper yellow that reads as traditional Indian gold
  • The piece is a bridal heirloom meant to pass down generations
  • You are setting a stone above 2 carats, where we usually recommend 18K for a heavier, more substantial mount
  • You are buying primarily as a store of value rather than to wear

We manufacture in all three, and we will tell you honestly which one suits your piece. On a 0.20 carat everyday stud, 9K is the smarter buy. On a 3 carat solitaire, we will normally point you to 18K. If you are buying across a whole wedding, our wedding week jewellery timeline sets out which karat suits which ceremony.

Frequently asked questions about 9K gold

Is 9K gold real gold? Yes. 9 karat gold is solid gold alloy containing 37.5% pure gold, marked 375. It is not plated, and since July 2025 it has been covered under mandatory BIS hallmarking in India.

What does 375 mean on gold? 375 means 375 parts of pure gold per 1,000, which is 37.5%, which is 9 karat. It is the fineness mark used for 9KT gold worldwide.

What is the 9K gold rate today in India? The metal value of 9 carat gold is 37.5% of the 24K rate. With 24K around ₹15,957 per gram as on 30 August 2026, 9K works out to roughly ₹5,984 per gram before making charges and GST. Check our website for today's live rate.

Is 9 carat gold good for daily wear? It is one of the best choices for daily wear. The high alloy content makes it harder and more scratch resistant than 18K or 22K, and it holds diamond prongs more securely.

Does 9K gold tarnish? It can dull slowly over months because of the copper and silver in the alloy. It is surface level and reverses with a soft cloth or a professional polish. It does not fade, because there is no plating to wear off.

Is 9K gold hallmarked in India? Yes. BIS extended mandatory hallmarking to 9 carat gold in July 2025. A genuine piece carries the BIS logo, the 9K375 purity mark and a unique six digit HUID.

What is the resale value of 9K gold in India? On the open market, weight multiplied by 0.375 multiplied by the day's gold rate, minus 5% to 15% in deductions, with nothing paid for the stone. At Goenka Jewellers, on an eligible piece, you get 100% of the gold value back and 80% cash on the lab grown diamond, valued at market rates on the date of return. Customised and made to order products are excluded.

Which is better, 9K or 14K gold? 9K is harder, cheaper and lighter in colour. 14K has a richer tone and higher metal value. For everyday studs and stackable rings, 9 karat wins on value. For a piece you want to feel more traditional, 14K is the better fit.

Can you set a lab grown diamond in 9K gold? Yes, and it is one of the best pairings available. The harder metal grips the stone more securely and the lower metal cost lets you put more of your budget into carat weight.

Is 9K gold good for an engagement ring? For an everyday engagement ring with a stone up to about 1.5 carats, yes. Above 2 carats we usually recommend 18K for a heavier mount that balances the stone visually. Our engagement ring buying guide covers how to weigh that against cut, shape and carat.

Does 9 karat gold turn your finger green? Rarely, and only when acidic sweat reacts with copper in the alloy. It is harmless, washes off, and is far more common with unhallmarked jewellery than with properly alloyed hallmarked 9K.

Is 9K gold available in white and rose? Yes. We manufacture 9 karat in yellow, white and rose. In white and rose the colour difference against 14K and 18K is minimal, which makes 9K white gold particularly popular for solitaire settings.

How much does a 9K gold lab grown diamond ring cost? Our 9K lab grown diamond rings start at ₹13,281 for a complete hallmarked ring with a certified stone.

How much do 9K gold lab grown diamond earrings cost? Our 9K lab grown diamond earrings start at ₹15,809 for 0.14 carat and go up to around ₹29,497 for a 0.60 carat pair.

Can I exchange 9K gold jewellery for 18K later? On an eligible piece, yes. Exchange gives you 100% of the diamond value and 100% of the gold value, at market rates on the date of return, towards any upgrade including a change of karat. Customised and made to order products are non-exchangeable, so ask us before you commission.

The short version

9K gold is real gold, 37.5% pure, marked 375, hallmarked in India since July 2025, and harder than every higher karat. It costs about half of 18K per gram, which is exactly the room you need to put a bigger lab grown diamond in a ring or a pair of earrings you will actually wear every day. The trade off is a lighter colour and lower bullion value per gram, and the second half of that trade off largely disappears if you buy from a jeweller who gives you full gold buyback and a real cash number on the stone.
