The Goenka standard
A lab grown diamond is only as good as the hands that select it and the workshop that sets it. Ours is a closed loop: we choose the rough grading ourselves, our own karigars finish every piece, and the same family answers for it decades later.
- Three generations, one accountable name. We still honour invoices written in 1998. There is no customer-service queue between you and the people who made your piece.
- IGI-certified stones, verified in front of you. Every centre stone carries an IGI report and a matching laser inscription on the girdle, and we will show you how to check it independently.
- Cut judged by eye, not only by paper. Two stones with identical certificates can perform very differently in light. We will tell you when a technically higher grade is the poorer diamond. That is a conversation you can only have in person.

Read across that table and one distinction stands out. Almost every brand in the Indian lab grown diamond market buys finished jewellery and retails it. A jeweller that designs, grades and sets under its own roof is now the exception rather than the rule, and it is the difference you feel in the weight of a shank, the seat of a prong and the way light enters a stone from below.
Five things to check before you buy any lab grown diamond
1. Certification, and verify it yourself
Insist on an IGI or GIA report with a matching laser inscription. Some brands substitute SGL certification on parts of their range. That is not disqualifying, but it is not the same benchmark. Look the report number up on the issuing laboratory's own website, never on the seller's page. If you are new to the category, start with what a lab grown diamond actually is.
2. Cut, the grade that photographs cannot show
Colour and clarity are printed on paper. Cut is what you actually see. Two F/VS1 one-carat stones can look markedly different under the same light, and no product photograph will reveal it. This is the single strongest argument for seeing a significant stone in person before you commit, and it is where our three generations of grading experience earn their place. 3. The setting, and who made it
A diamond is only as beautiful as the metal holding it. Ask who manufactures the piece. Outsourced production can be perfectly competent, but you cannot ask a factory to adjust a gallery height or soften a prong profile for your hand. You can ask a karigar.
4. The buy-back clause, in writing
Nearly every brand now advertises "lifetime buy-back" or "lifetime exchange". They are not the same thing, and the percentage, the exclusions and the treatment of making charges vary enormously. 5. Who is answerable in 2036
Resetting a stone into a daughter's ring. Upsizing on a tenth anniversary. Repairing a prong worn thin by twenty years of wear. It depends on what you need after the purchase. For volume and convenience on small everyday pieces, the large chains are efficient. For a significant stone, a bridal set or a custom commission, a jeweller with in-house grading and karigari and a written lifetime exchange is a different proposition.
