What 1 Carat Looks Like

Diameter. A 1ct round brilliant diamond measures approximately 6.4mm to 6.5mm across. For reference, this is roughly the diameter of a standard pencil eraser.

Shape affects perceived size. An oval or pear-shaped 1ct diamond appears larger than a round 1ct because the elongated shape covers more surface area on the finger. Marquise cuts appear the largest per carat.

On a smaller finger. 1ct looks proportionally larger on a smaller ring size. The same diamond on a size 6 ring appears more prominent than on a size 10.

How to Choose a 1 Carat Diamond

Cut grade is critical at 1ct. An Excellent-cut 1ct diamond will show significantly more brilliance than a Good-cut 1ct of the same colour and clarity. At this size, cut quality is the single biggest factor in how the diamond looks.

Colour grade for 1ct. At 1ct, colour differences become slightly more visible to the eye than at smaller sizes. G to H colour is the practical sweet spot. D to F is colourless but commands a premium that may not be visually justified at this size for most buyers.

Clarity for 1ct. VS1 to VS2 is eye-clean at 1ct under normal viewing conditions. SI1 can also be eye-clean but requires checking the certificate plot to confirm the inclusion location.

Lab grown diamonds and natural diamonds differ only in origin and price:

•     Carbon structure: Identical in both. Same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, same refractive index, same brilliance.

•     Price: Lab grown costs 60 to 75% less than a natural diamond of the same cut, colour, and clarity grade.

•     Origin: Lab grown from a CVD or HPHT laboratory. Natural from earth-mined sources.
