How to Choose a Diamond Pendant

Chain length. 16 inches sits at the collarbone. 18 inches falls just below. For pendants worn with round-neck clothing, 18 inches is the most practical.

Pendant size for daily wear. 0.1ct to 0.4ct is comfortable for all-day wear. Larger pendants above 0.7ct are better for occasions where the jewellery is meant to be noticed.

Setting security. Bezel settings encase the diamond fully and are the most secure for daily wear. Prong settings show more of the stone but have exposed metal tips.

Lab Grown vs Natural Diamond Pendants

Lab grown diamonds and natural diamonds differ only in origin and price:

•     Carbon structure: Identical in both. Same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, same refractive index, same fire and brilliance.

•     Certification: Both carry IGI or GIA grading certificates with full 4Cs documentation.

•     Price: Lab grown costs 60 to 75% less than a natural diamond of the same cut, colour, and clarity grade.

•     Origin: Lab grown from a CVD or HPHT laboratory. Natural from earth-mined sources.

•     Secondary market: Lab grown has a lower secondary resale market at this time. Natural diamonds have an established resale market. Worth knowing before purchase.

A 0.5ct lab grown diamond solitaire pendant in 18K white gold costs approximately Rs.35,000 to Rs.55,000 at Goenka. A natural diamond equivalent starts at Rs.90,000 or more.

Price Ranges

•     Under Rs.15,000 — 0.1ct to 0.2ct, 14K gold. Best for: Daily wear, gifting, minimalist styles.

•     Rs.15,000 to Rs.40,000 — 0.2ct to 0.5ct. Best for: Solitaires, heart pendants, occasion wear.

•     Rs.40,000 to Rs.1,00,000 — 0.5ct to 1ct, 18K gold. Best for: Statement pendants, sets, celebrations.

•     Above Rs.1,00,000 — 1ct and above. Best for: Large solitaires, diamond necklace sets.
